detox-foods

The word “detox” gets thrown around a lot, but it doesn’t mean you have to suffer through another crash diet or strict intermittent fasting plan.

Detoxing, neutralizing, and eliminating harmful toxins is something that your body does naturally. But, certain foods can give your body a hand with the process. Incorporate these ten natural detoxifying foods into your diet.

1. Avocado

Avocados are renowned for their health benefits. Their high soluble fiber content helps your body eliminate waste and feed the healthy bacteria living in your gut. This super fruit also lowers cholesterol and triglyceride levels in your body.

To maximize its detoxifying properties and taste, turn your avocado into guacamole. Tomatoes contain vitamin C, and cilantro (also known as coriander) aids your immune and digestive systems.

2. Ginger

There’s a reason there are so many stomach-soothing teas packed with ginger available.

Ginger offers multiple health benefits such as relieving uncomfortable gas, reducing inflammation, and lowering cholesterol rates. It’s also rich in antioxidants, which help your body fight off harmful diseases. This spicy root is even said to help reduce menstrual cramps.

If you don’t like tea, try out a new ginger-centric recipe. Asian dishes frequently feature ginger root. Access health benefits and expand your culinary repertoire by adding ginger to your next meal.

3. Citrus fruits

Citrus fruits contain more than just vitamin C. These tart fruits are hydrating, packed with potassium, and even help you absorb other nutrients.

When you’re feeling peckish, grab an orange or grapefruit instead of a processed snack. Or add a couple of slices of lemon to your water for a refreshing and nutritious drink.

4. Beets

This deep red vegetable offers much more than just a pop of color to your meals. Beetroot helps detox your liver. It also helps regulate your blood pressure, which helps prevent strokes and other heart diseases. The high levels of choline and betaine in beets help fight inflammation and protect your cells from environmental stress.

A beet salad makes a terrific lunch, and pickled beets are the perfect addition to any sandwiches. Or try making a beet hummus —  a low-calorie alternative to the traditional chickpea spread.

5. Garlic

The most pungent item on this list may also contain the most detoxifying properties. Garlic has antibiotic, antiviral, and antibacterial properties, making it a perfect choice for flu season.

To get the most out of garlic, don’t cook it. Instead, add crushed garlic to your salad dressing for an extra kick of flavor and health benefits.

6. Asparagus

Asparagus’s blend of amino acids and minerals protects your liver’s cells. It’s also a powerful diuretic, helping your body flush out harmful toxins.

There is no shortage of great asparagus recipes. You can shave them, toss them in a light vinaigrette, wrap them in bacon, or even eat them raw.

7. Cruciferous vegetables and leafy greens

When it comes to vegetables, the greener, the better. The chlorophyll found in leafy greens is a powerful detoxifying pigment that cleans your blood and intestines while stimulating your immune system. Cruciferous vegetables (such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and brussels sprouts) also boost liver health and contain high fiber levels to help your bowels function properly.

There are countless ways to increase your consumption of green vegetables. Whip up a fresh salad, roast a pan of vegetables, add kale to your smoothies, or add bok choy to your stir-fry.

8. Blueberries

A popular superfood, blueberries contain vitamin K, vitamin C, and loads of fiber. They’re also abundant in polyphenols, micronutrients known for their antioxidant, disease-fighting properties.

Blueberries are a great addition to any sweet or savory meal. You can toss blueberries into a salad or bowl of cereal for a burst of added flavor. Or you can rinse them off, stick them in a bowl, and enjoy the fresh.

9. Green Tea

Green tea has been touted for its detoxifying properties for thousands of years. This renowned tea boosts your body’s production of detoxification enzymes. Its antioxidants also stop free radicals from causing damage to your cells.

Why not try switching your morning coffee for a healthier caffeine alternative? Or sip green tea in the afternoon for a mild caffeine boost. Brewing loose leaf tea allows for more antioxidants to be released, giving you the healthiest cup.

10. Brown rice

Whole grains are a good source of vitamins, fiber, and essential fatty acids. Brown rice also contains high levels of selenium, which can protect your liver and improve your complexion.

The next time a dish calls for rice, leave the white grains on the shelf, and reach for this healthier alternative.
